Taking quizzes & assignments

Most courses use assignments to test your knowledge in a course. These may also be called quizzes.

Completing assignments

You can find all your assignments in the My assignments tab.

Find Assignments

To complete an assignment:

  1. Open the assignment.
  2. Click Start assignment.
  3. Complete the questions.
  4. Click Submit.

Most course assignments are auto-graded.

Time limits

When you open a quiz/assignment, you’ll see the estimated time to complete it near the top of the page.

Some quizzes/assignments also have a time limit. You’ll see this on the page before you start the quiz/assignment. You’ll also see a countdown timer while you’re working on the quiz/assignment.

If the timer runs out during your first submission, your work will automatically be submitted as-is. If you run out of time, you can retake the quiz/assignment (as long as you have remaining attempts).

Assignment grades

When you submit an auto-graded quiz, exam or assignment, you’ll see your score right away in the Enrolled Quizzes/Grades tab. For some assignments, you may also see feedback for assignment questions.

When you open an assignment, you’ll see the required score to pass (which is 80% for most courses). In most courses, you’ll need to pass every assignment to complete the course and earn a certificate.

Types of quiz questions

Quizzes may use questions that are multiple choice, drop-down, short answer, or long-answer.

Multiple choice questions

There are two types of multiple choice questions:

  • If the answer options for a quiz question are round, there is only one right answer. You can only choose one at a time.
  • If the answer options for a quiz are square, there might be more than one right answer. In some courses, you need to choose all the right answers to get points for the question. In other courses, you can get partial credit for choosing some of the right answers.

Drop-down questions

Some questions may have drop-down menus you can select answers from. These may require you to put your answers in a specific order.

Short answer quiz questions

For short answer quiz questions, you’ll need to type in the correct answer.

Capitalization doesn’t matter, but your answer needs to match the correct answer provided by your instructor. Make sure you follow the course’s directions for formatting your answers. Avoid extra spaces and punctuation.

Long answer questions

For long-answer questions, you’ll use a rich text editor to provide a response.

Fill in the gap questions

For fill ion the gap questions, you’ll provide a response to the question in the provided gap.

Retake assignments

Most quizzes have unlimited attempts. Either your highest score or most recent score will be counted as your grade. This info will be shown when you open the quiz/assignment.

To start a new attempt:

  1. Open the quiz in your curriculum tab.
  2. Click Retake.
